Archive for August, 2009

Like last summer, we participated with other missionaries in the English camp outreach in Navarra that the Leatherwoods lead.  This year, theatre camp presented Prince Caspian.  Sierra played Susan, Andrea Lucy, Timmy was a beaver, and Theo a little lion.  Nate was in charge of making the set (again impressing all with his carpentry talents…says his wife).  I helped with making costumes, organizing them, and with make-up.  All staff took part in being with the kids during all the different activities from sports to games to excursions to singing, meals, etc.  All the campers had some part in the play.  The kids had fun.  Nate and I enjoyed the other missionaries and team from Bridgepoint  and being a part of campers lives…but we were EXHAUSTED.  I think we’ve recovered.  There was also video taken during the week.  You can see these on youtube:  More pictures on facebook.com (Maria Michelle Saxe)

After having the kids tested at the Madrid mission school, we continued up north to Basque country. We spent a couple days with our missionary friends, the Karnsunds, in Zarautz.  We had a great time.  Even with 8 kids & 3 dogs we were able to talk and talk…and talk.

The next couple days we spent camping in Les Landes (just across the Spanish border in France).  It was a relaxing time and full of fun activities for the kids.  Our favorite part was hearing French!  Campers from northern europe, England, France…so a real mix of languages.

After camping, we headed back down to Navarra region to help again with camp at 7 oaks (like last summer).  Had a little glitch on the way down that delayed our arrival 5 hours…a dead battery.  At least we were in a beautiful pass in Basque country.  Next, we arrive at camp…the much needed relaxing 5 days in Zarautz and Les Landes are over!

August 1st and 2nd The Ubeda church had a retreat in Cazorla.  A family from church lives there and owns a “casa rural” where they housed us.  It was a relaxing time and valuable in getting to know people better.  We enjoyed the pool, the peaceful setting, and the water running from springs in this area.

August e-newsletter

7 Oaks English Camp ’09
Prince Caspian
August is camp time in Spain and so we headed north to again be a part of the English camps in Navarra.  We all had a great time being part of this out reach to Spanish children.  Our girls had the privilege of being Susan and Lucy and really enjoyed their roles.  Parts of the play were filmed ahead of time and you can see them on YouTube.   Theo played the part of a young lion and Timmy a Beaver, singing and dancing. Mary had much work in preparing the 50 or so costumes and doing make-up the day of the show.  I had a small bridge to build between a couple huge oaks, the challenge was spanning the 33 feet and making it stable and safe for the herds of kids that ran across it. Fortunately, we had no galloping gurney disasters.  Our time was wonderful and yet exhausting. We also enjoyed a few days camping although they ended in a flurry of rain and racing to pack up the van. To see more photos and fun check out facebook or our blog.
Ubeda Church Retreat
Like I said, August is for Camps…

For 3 days, our church took refuge from the heat of Ubeda to climb the mountains and stay at a Casa Rural (Rustic Country Inn) owned by one of the church members. It was a fantastic time of fellowship and beauty. The Sierra de Cazorla are a fine example of the rustic charm of Southern Spain.  This casa rural was situated high up a windy mountain road that was truly death defying to drive. I felt like I should have earned a ribbon for traversing it safely.  The Inn is situated in one of the climbing ravines that has a wonderful babbling brook bringing much greenery and refreshing sound. Fig trees wove all around and their fragrance kept Mary commenting on how it brought delightful memories of her Nana’s home in La Canada Ca.

Ministry life
Youth work

Work in the church continues with the youth. We are working towards building them up as we have heard of so many youth who leave the church once they hit their twenties. I want to sow the passion of God into their lives. PLEASE pray for me in this task as so often they seem like many typical church kids who are tired of hearing the sunday school stories.
